Alaska Airlines Operations Halted Across America Because of IT Outage
The airline halted all departures at airports nationwide on the day due to a technical issue.
The US carrier announced that it was "facing an IT outage affecting operations" and implemented "a temporary ground stop."
The airline did not disclose the duration the disruption would continue or the number of flights were affected. It stated it was "actively restoring our operations" after the incident.
The ground stop also impacted Horizon Air, which is a subsidiary of the parent company, according to an notice by the Federal Aviation Administration.
The airline, a member of The Alaska Air Group headquartered in Seattle, Washington, mainly serves on the West Coast of the United States. It connects 140 destinations globally, including multiple states and 12 countries, according to its website.
Previously, the airline joined forces with another carrier, which was unaffected by the day's flight suspension.
It is the second IT outage impacting the airline in recent months. In July, an outage disrupted operations for about three hours.
The company did not immediately respond on Thursday to media inquiries.
Air transportation in the US has been disrupted in the past few weeks due to federal budget issues that began earlier this month. Lack of flight controllers showing up for work has delayed flights at several airports.
