Concerning Increase in At-Risk Native Bee Types In the European Continent
The total of wild bee species in Europe experiencing extinction has increased twofold during the previous ten-year period, while the total of threatened butterfly types has close to doubled.
This pressing issue for essential pollinating species was disclosed by scientific assessments for the IUCN red list, which determined that at least 172 bee varieties out of 1,928 were facing extinction in European nations.
The count of butterfly species facing extinction in European nations has increased from over thirty-five to 65 since the earlier research, conducted a decade and a half ago. One type, the Madeiran large white (Pieris wollastoni) has now been confirmed extinct.

The causes of the rapid recent declines are the ongoing damage or destruction of living environments caused by farming intensification and abandoned land, wetland drainage, livestock overgrazing, and the utilization of chemical fertilisers and pesticides including neonicotinoids. The breaking up of pollinator-friendly habitat substantially boosts the threat of extinctions at local level.
Global warming is also shown to be a significant danger: Over half of all endangered butterfly species in Europe are endangered by the climate crisis – roughly twice as many as a decade ago.
As many as 90% of flowering plants in Europe rely on insect pollination, as per the lead coordinator of the wild bee assessment. “Regrettably, native bee populations are in drastic decline and are not easily replaceable by managed colonies,” he said. “If wild bees disappear, many wild plants might be at risk too – of which flower-rich meadows and lovely orchid types are just a few examples.”
15 varieties of bumblebee species, which have an essential part in fertilizing legumes like peas, beans, peanuts and clover, and fourteen varieties of cellophane bees, famous for pollinating trees such as willows and red maples, are now classified as threatened. Simpanurgus phyllopodus, a mining bee type found only in the European continent and the only species of this biological genus in Europe, is now classified as critically at risk – the research category closest to dying out in natural habitats.
Butterflies that are solely present on mountain tops are particularly vulnerable to global heating as they have to climb upward as their living spaces become hotter but in the end run out of space. In Spain’s southern region, the grayling of Nevada and the Andalusian anomalous blue are among more than 40% of species endemic to Europe (solely present in Europe) at risk of extinction.
In the Mediterranean area, varieties such as the severely threatened Karpathos grayling butterfly are imperilled by extreme dry conditions and fires.
At the same time, in the Arctic region, global warming is resulting in the timberline to move north by many meters each year, with underbrush taking over marsh and tundra. Higher temperatures also mean Arctic deer can no more cross the frozen water to graze Arctic meadows and maintain them clear. “The greatest living space for all these pollinating insects is grassland rich in flowers and that is vanishing rapidly throughout European nations because of all these reasons,” remarked one of the lead coordinators of the butterflies assessment. “The good news is that so many citizens are aware now and there’s a lot more awareness. Under the EU nature restoration legislation, all member states have to halt the decrease in pollinating species by the year 2030, and they are going to have to start doing something. There are land holders who are engaged. Let’s hope they can obtain the incentives that will assist them on their way.”
As per Martin Warren, there is “readily achievable actions” in terms of measures for pollinators which won’t reduce crop yields – and could improve it – such as farmers developing flower-rich margins around their fields.
Jessika Roswall, characterized the preservation condition of native bees, butterflies and additional pollinators as “dire”.
“Urgent and collective action is required to confront this threat. Along with member countries, the European Commission has put in place an EU-wide monitoring system for pollinating insects based on the EU nature restoration law, which will assist in monitoring our development. The release of the bee and butterfly assessments follows the first EU-wide evaluation of hoverflies, a further crucial pollinating insect category. Released in 2022, it disclosed that 37% of all hoverfly types in Europe were facing extinction.
