The Young Spinner Earns Unexpected Inclusion in English Test Series Team
The English team has chosen a twelve-player selection just two days ahead of the first Ashes Test, with Shoaib Bashir securing a unexpected spot.
Bashir's selection indicates that the visiting team will wait until the morning of the first Test to decide whether Perth Stadium pitch suit four seamers or the addition of a spin bowler.
Both pace bowlers are part of the 12-man group, indicating there are no doubts about either pace bowler’s fitness.
The other seamers complete the bowling group, with the latter most likely to be omitted if the spinner makes the final team.
Ground Conditions Lean Toward Pace Bowlers
Brendon McCullum had been expected to opt for an all-seam attack on a ground that has hosted five previous Tests.
In those games, 134 wickets have fallen to seamers, with only 40 to spin bowling.
Of those 40 wickets, the veteran spinner has claimed 29, while all visiting spinners together have only eight.
At a venue renowned for its speed and carry, and whose curator, Isaac McDonald, stated that these characteristics are “a mainstay and not going to change,” a side loaded with fast bowlers remains the more likely decision.
Spin Options Considered
There had been rumors that the all-rounder could be parachuted into the side to offer some spin while also bolstering the lower order.
However McCullum has opted to keep faith with Bashir, having said previously that he would be his first-choice slow bowler for the Ashes.
Earlier, Lyon described Bashir as “decent,” saying that “from my perspective, the experienced spinner is still the English top slow bowler.”
“It is a massive role, and it can be a significant test for bowlers who lack experience in the past in these conditions,” Lyon said of slow bowling in Australian Tests.
“I’m not going to reveal my strategies so opponents perform and perform well out here.”
