Former President Donald J. Trump on Wednesday demanded the detainment of Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson and Illinois Governor JB Pritzker, accusing them of failing to protect ICE agents.

"The city's leader belongs behind bars for failing to secure Immigration agents!" Trump posted on his platform Wednesday morning. "Governor Pritzker too!"

The two leaders are members of the Democratic faction.

Trump's statements coincide with the deployment of National Guard personnel in the Chicago region following directives from the current government, despite strong objections from state officials including the governor and mayor.

"This marks not the first instance where Trump has sought to have an African American leader wrongfully arrested," Johnson responded on that day. "I am staying anywhere."

The governor responded via social platforms, stating: "I will not yield. Trump is now demanding arrests of democratically chosen representatives checking his power. What remains on the road toward full-blown autocracy?"

As of midweek, National Guard troops from the Lone Star State had reached the Elwood training facility, a military installation roughly 80 kilometers from the city, as the administration advances with its hardline urban crime policy and immigration enforcement operations.

Trump has called Chicago a "crime-ridden hellhole", even though official statistics indicate notable reductions in many offenses, including homicides.

That day, two hundred Texas National Guard members were scheduled to arrive to the region, with another 300 Illinois guard forces readying for deployment, according to sources. Officials indicated the troops would not perform law enforcement duties but would secure ICE officers and government buildings.

Military personnel in combat attire with Texas national guard patches were observed at the US army reserve center in Elwood. Trucks marked "Emergency Disaster Services" dropped off portable toilets and essential items. Trailers were set up in lines. Additional fencing was placed around the perimeter.

The Federal Aviation Administration imposed no-fly zones over the military base for safety concerns until early December.

Federal authorities has intensified deportation operations in the city in recent weeks, triggering protests, especially near an immigration center in Broadview.

Earlier this week, state and city filed a lawsuit targeting the administration, attempting to halt the military dispatch, urging a federal judge to stop what they call "the president's proclaimed 'War'" on Chicago and Illinois, labeling it "unlawful and risky".

A court hearing on their case is scheduled for Thursday.

The mayor also issued an executive order on Monday prohibiting federal immigration agents and related personnel from using municipal facilities as staging areas for enforcement actions.

The governor has charged Trump of using military forces as "political props" and "chess pieces".

During a press briefing on Tuesday, he said that Trump is trying to "justify and make acceptable the presence of military personnel under his personal authority."

The historic Posse Comitatus Act restricts the military's role in enforcing domestic laws. However, Trump has said he would be willing to activate the emergency powers, which permits a commander-in-chief to dispatch active duty military in states that are unable to suppress an uprising or are defying federal law.

Since starting his new administration, the president has sent or discussed deploying troops to over ten urban centers, including major metropolitan areas and California cities like Oakland, San Francisco and Los Angeles, claiming that the armed forces is essential to fight violence and defend ICE officers.

Data shows that serious offenses nationwide has decreased in recent years. In the city, for example, homicides were reduced 31% to 278 through late summer, according to police data.

A recent poll published on Wednesday found that most Americans oppose the deployment of troops without an external threat.
