The heightened security at the Peloponnesian ports came after earlier rallies when the MS Crown Iris arrived in Kalamata in the past few days. Earlier, passengers aboard the same vessel were unable to leave the ship and the liner was compelled to change course to Cyprus after local residents organized demonstrations on the Cycladic island of Syros.

The head official of the Hebrew Communities Council in Greece voiced worry: "Of course we're concerned. The type of language we're experiencing can quickly turn into prejudiced."
