McDonald's Netherlands Pulls AI-Generated Festive Advertisement Following Online Criticism.
The global fast-food chain has removed a Christmas commercial created with generative AI following facing significant criticism on social media.
The short film was developed using generative AI clips and was initially uploaded on the YouTube channel for McDonald's Netherlands on 6 December.
Audience Criticism and Decision to Pull
Following its publication, viewers on social media lambasted the implementation of AI in the advert. Several labeled it "creepy" and "poorly edited".
"This moment represents an key learning as we examine the effective utilization of AI," commented a spokesperson from McDonald's Netherlands.
The commercial was produced for McDonald's by Dutch agency TBWA\Neboko and US firm The Sweetshop. It showed various situations that often go badly during the Christmas break, under the tagline "the worst time of the year".
A Growing Trend of AI-Generated Ads
Commercials that incorporate AI tools have become a increasing phenomenon among prominent companies, notably for the holiday season.
- Another beverage giant has similarly launched consecutive AI-generated holiday ads.
- Inherent Limitations: As videos made with generative AI are prone to degrade the longer they run, the majority of such clips tend to be only a few seconds in length.
- Industry Concerns: The ad also sparked fears about job displacement in the creative sector, with some commenters pointing out it could reduce opportunities for production staff.
Response from the Production Company
Following the ad being taken down, a producer's chief executive, Melanie Bridge, spoke in support of the project.
According to her, the creation took "over a month and a half" and involved creating "numerous versions" which were then shaped during the edit "just as we would on any traditional production".
"This was not an AI gimmick," Bridge asserted. "We consider it a film."
Mixed Audience Sentiment
While the Dutch McDonald's ad was mostly criticized, the response for other AI-generated holiday ads has been divisive.
For instance, a recent AI-created holiday ad from another major brand reportedly achieved a significant "favorable response" from viewers.
However, various brands have likewise faced scrutiny for employing the technique in advertising. Luxury fashion house Valentino, for example, was lambasted for advertisements that some called "cheap" and "disturbing".
The situation illustrates the continuing conversation within the advertising and production industries about the trade-off between new tools and human craftsmanship.
